How to care for a leather bag: cleaning, conditioning and storage

A leather bag is regularly handled, placed on different surfaces and exposed to changing temperatures. Dust, moisture and friction can stress the material over time. Moderate, suitable care helps keep compatible smooth leather clean and supple.

1. Identify the leather type

These steps mainly apply to compatible smooth leather. Nubuck, suede, patent leather and coated or particularly sensitive surfaces require different products and methods.

2. Empty the bag and remove dust

Empty every compartment and remove loose dust with a soft, dry cloth. Pay attention to seams, edges, handles and hardware.

3. Treat stains carefully

Do not rub stains aggressively. Use only a cleaner or conditioner suitable for the leather type and test it on a hidden area. Water, alcohol, household cleaners and wipes can affect the colour or finish.

4. Apply a thin layer of conditioner

For compatible smooth leather surfaces, Brilliant Gel 50 ml can be used for cleaning, conditioning and visual refreshment. Apply a small amount evenly with a soft cloth and follow the product instructions.

5. Polish and let dry

If directed, polish the surface after a short application time with a clean, soft cloth. Let the bag dry at room temperature, away from direct heat and strong sunlight.

6. Store while preserving the shape

Store the bag in a dry, ventilated place away from direct light. Fill it loosely with clean, colourfast paper or a suitable insert. A breathable dust bag is preferable to an airtight plastic bag.
