How to Clean the Inside of Shoes: Step-by-Step Hygiene

Over time, moisture, skin particles and odours can build up inside shoes. Gentle, regular care can help keep the interior fresh without damaging the lining, insoles or adhesive bonds.

Check the material, care label and removable insoles before cleaning.

1. Air the shoes thoroughly

Open the laces, hook-and-loop straps or zips fully and let the shoes dry at room temperature after use. Do not place damp shoes directly on a heater or use a hair dryer. Strong heat can affect linings, foams and adhesives.

2. Remove the insoles and laces

Take out removable insoles and laces. This improves airflow and makes different areas easier to reach. Check whether the manufacturer permits damp cleaning of the insoles. If they are not washable, brush them gently or wipe them with a slightly damp cloth.

3. Remove dry dirt

Remove sand, dust and loose residue with a soft brush or dry cloth, then gently shake out the shoe. Hard brushes and vigorous scrubbing can roughen delicate lining materials.

4. Clean the lining with minimal moisture

Use only a small amount of moisture. Apply a compatible cleaner to a cloth or soft brush instead of soaking the interior. The Premium Power Foam Cleaner Set may be suitable for selected materials. Check the product information and test it on an inconspicuous area first.

Wipe away loosened dirt with a clean, slightly damp cloth. Do not use bleach, solvents, aggressive household cleaners or strongly perfumed mixtures. They can affect materials, colour and adhesive bonds.

5. Allow the shoes to dry completely

Place the open shoes in a dry, well-ventilated location. Reinsert the insoles and laces only when every part is fully dry. Clean, absorbent and colourfast paper can be inserted loosely to absorb moisture. Avoid heavily printed newspaper because ink may transfer.

6. Reduce odours between cleanings

A shoe deodorant can help reduce unpleasant odours between cleaning sessions. Use the Shoe Deo 125 ml according to the label and in a well-ventilated area. A deodorant does not replace cleaning or complete drying.

Always combine odour care with regular airing and complete drying.

How often should the interior be cleaned?

The frequency depends on use, weather, material and perspiration. Airing is useful after intensive wear. A more thorough clean is appropriate when visible dirt or persistent odours appear. Heavily soaked, damaged or delicate shoes may require professional assessment.

When should insoles be replaced?

When they retain persistent odour, lose their shape, become damaged or cannot be refreshed despite suitable cleaning.
